What is Calprotectin? Calprotectin is a 36 kDa heterodimeric calcium bind protein that comprises approximately 60% of the cytosolic proteins present in inflammatory cells. Therefore, during intestinal inflammation, calprotectin quantification can be used to measure the level of neutrophils present in the intestinal lumen. The amount measured is tiny—usually micrograms of calprotectin per gram of stool— but it’s enough to indicate the level of inflammation in your intestines. Faecal calprotectin levels can be affected by stool consistency, so to get the most accurate result possible, it’s important you prepare for the stool test. 2021-04-10 · Calprotectin is a protein, which is used to detect the inflammation of intestine. It is detected in the stool.

In other words, if your stool test shows low calprotectin level, this is great news! High Levels of Calprotectin. Elevated levels of calprotectin, around 250 to 300 µg/g or above, is a red flag and indicator of IBD. Calprotectin is not evenly distributed in the stool sample, so a sensible amount needs to be sent to the laboratory for testing – too little and there may be no calprotectin in the portion sent.

Faecal calprotectin (or fecal calprotectin) is a biochemical measurement of the protein calprotectin in the stool.Elevated faecal calprotectin indicates the migration of neutrophils to the intestinal mucosa, which occurs during intestinal inflammation, including inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease. Calprotectin is the inflammatory protein that can be measured in the stool. A calprotectin level below 60 is considered normal. If the calprotectin level is 150 or higher, significant inflammation is present in the body.

Disclosure: INOVA [speaking] 2012-01-10 · Calprotectin was measured in a single stool sample in all patients. Patients were instructed to collect the sample at home 24 hours prior to bowel preparation for endoscopy. Samples were delivered on the day of the investigation and stored in a refrigerator before transfer to the study laboratory (Rothen Medical Laboratories, Basel, Switzerland) within 48 hours for analysis. In a stool test our poo (or stool) is analysed to check for a number of things.
